Minutes for January 11, 1998

Beets Home — East Memphis

Present: Barry Anderson, Cyd Beets, Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Carroll Joachimi, Knick Knickerbocker, Sandi Knickerbocker, Andy McClung, Bob Oliver, Judith Oliver.

The meeting was opened by reading the Collect of the Day for the First Sunday after Epiphany.

Dennis Beets notified the group that it may be necessary to find another permanent meeting facility due to the scheduling policies on the Steak and Ale management. He will investigate other options and notify everyone before the next meeting.

Barry Anderson served as moderator for the program. The discussion focused on the first letter in Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters.

The February meeting will focus on Lewis’ Poems and the March meeting will focus on Lewis’ Boxen.

Minutes for February 8, 1998

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary

Present: Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Knick Knickerbocker, Ann Marty, Bill Marty, Andy McClung, Bob Oliver, Judith Oliver.

The meeting was opened by reading the Collect of the Day for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany.

Dennis Beets brought an update on the search for permanent meeting facility. He will contact St. John’s Episcopal Church and Second Presbyterian Church. If neither place is available, he will contact Memphis Seminary concerning a permanent arrangement.

Barry Anderson served as moderator for the program. The discussion focused on Lewis’ poetry. Everyone read a selection from Poems or Spirits in Bondage. An interpretive discussion followed a number of the readings.

The March meeting will focus on Lewis’ essay, “Modern Man and His Categories of Thought” found in Present Concerns. The April meeting will be held on the first Sunday (April 5) to avoid a conflict with Easter. The subject of the discussion will be Boxen.

Minutes for March 8, 1998

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary

Present: Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Justice Carmon, Janet Cupo, Andy McClung, Bob Oliver, Judith Oliver.

The meeting was opened with prayer.

Dennis Beets brought an update on the search for permanent meeting facility. After a thorough investigation of possible meeting accommodations, it was decided to contact Memphis Seminary concerning a permanent arrangement.

It was announced that Volume 2 of the Unicorn’s Horn is ready for publication.

Barry Anderson served as moderator for the program. The discussion focused on Lewis’ essay, “Modern Man and His Categories of Thought” found in Present Concerns. There was particular interest in Lewis’ thoughts on the emancipation of women. The group decided that the essay warranted further attention and will continue the discussion at the April meeting. The subject of the May discussion will be Boxen.

Minutes of April 5, 1998 meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary

Present: Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Ann Marty, Bill Marty, Andy McClung, Bob Oliver, Judith Oliver.

Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Dennis Beets brought an update on the search for permanent meeting facility.  After a thorough investigation of possible meeting accommodations, it was decided to contact Memphis Seminary concerning a permanent arrangement.

Bill Marty and Dennis Beets reported on the recent Christianity in the Academy Conference at the University of Memphis.  The focus of the Conference was C. S. Lewis.  Approximately 75 people were present to hear the presentations 22 papers and panel discussions throughout the weekend.  Knick Knickerbocker and Dennis Beets presented papers at the conference.

The program was a continued discussion about Lewis’ essay, “Modern Man and His Categories of Thought” found in Present Concerns.  Dennis Beets summarized the essay for those who had not read it and a lively discussion stemmed from topics presented in the essay.

The next meeting will be on May 10.  The program will be a discussion of chapters one and two of The Great Divorce.
