Minutes for January 9, 2000

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Barry Anderson, Bill Cupo, Janet Cupo, Andy McClung. Barry Anderson opened the meeting with prayer. The group discussed the Society’s calendar for upcoming year. Suggestions for programs were discussed and the following selections were made: * January 9 Planning Meeting * February 13 The Four Loves – Storge * March 12 The Kilns – led by Karen Mulder * April 9 The Four Loves – Philia * May 14 The Four Loves – Eros * June 11 The Four Loves – Agape * July 16 Boxen – led by Barry Anderson * August 13 Movie and Discussion – Shadowlands * September 10 A Grief Observed * October 8 A Grief Observed * November 12 Poetry of CSL – led by Knick Knickerbocker * December 10 Christmas Gathering – Favorite Passages Submitted by Barry Anderson

Minutes of February 13, 2000 Meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: not recorded Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. The group listened to a tape of Lewis’ radio broadcast on The Four Loves – “Storge.”  Discussion followed. The next meeting will be March 12. The program will be a presentation by Karen Mulder on The Kilns, Lewis’ home outside of Oxford. Submitted by Barry Anderson

Minutes of March 12, 2000 Meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: not recorded Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. The program was an excellent presentation by Karen Mulder, focusing on the history, architecture, and restoration of The Kilns, Lewis’ home outside of Oxford. The next meeting will be April 9. The topic will be The Four Loves – “Philia.” Submitted by Barry Anderson

Minutes of April 9, 2000 Meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Bill Marty, Ann Marty, Dennis Beets, Lynn Whetherholt, Sara O’Dell, Anna Leeper, Carey Stone, Andy McClung. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. Bill and Ann Marty shared with the group some genuine Turkish Delight.  Reviews were mixed, but no one seemed to become addicted. Bill Marty reported on a successful Christianity in the Academy Conference held last month. The group listened to a tape of Lewis’ radio broadcast on The Four Loves – “Philia.”  Discussion followed. The next meeting will be May 14. The topic will be The Four Loves – “Eros.” Submitted by Andy McClung

Minutes of May 14, 2000 meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Barry Anderson, Knick Knickerbocker, Anna Leeper, Ann Marty, Bill Marty, Andy McClung, Lance Needham, Sara O’Dell, Carey Stone, Lynn Whetherholt, Chuck Yancey, Marsha Yancey. Andy McClung opened the meeting with prayer. Lynn Whetherholt announced that she would be relocating to Richmond, VA. Her presence and participation will be missed. Barry Anderson mentioned an increase in the number of queries through the web site. The group listened to a tape of Lewis’ radio broadcast on The Four Loves – “Eros.”  A lively and enjoyable discussion followed. The next meeting will be June 11. The topic will be The Four Loves – “Agape.” Submitted by Barry Anderson

Minutes of June 11, 2000 meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Barry Anderson, Alli Antemann, Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Sara O’Dell, Andy McClung. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. The group listened to a tape of Lewis’ radio broadcast on The Four Loves – “Agape.”  Everyone participated in a discussion about Agape (Charity) and how it compared and contrasted to the other loves. A critical review of the work was read as a closing comment on the book. The next meeting will be July 16.  Barry Anderson will lead a study of Boxen, a collection of stories written by Lewis when he was a child. Submitted by Barry Anderson

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Bill Cupo, Janet Cupo, Sara O’Dell, Bill Marty, Ann Marty, Andy McClung. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. Andy McClung opened the meeting with prayer. Barry Anderson presented a review and critique of Boxen, a collection of stories written by Lewis when he was a child. The next meeting will be August 13.  The program will feature a viewing and critique of the 1994 version of the film “Shadowlands.” Submitted by Barry Anderson

Minutes of August 13, 2000 meeting

Classroom B – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Alli Antemann, Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Bill Marty, Ann Marty, Andy McClung, Carey Stone, Nikolaus Tressler. Andy McClung opened the meeting with prayer. An invitation was read to the group from the Older Wiser Lifelong Scholars program in Columbus, OH, soliciting a member or members to teach a continuing education course in October 2001. Andy McClung announced that he would soon be relocating to Chattanooga, TN to serve as associate pastor of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The society expressed its deep gratitude to Andy for his service to the group over the years. Barry Anderson served as moderator for the program.  The group viewed the 1994 version of the movie “Shadowlands”, a dramatization of the relationship between C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman.  This was followed by a critical discussion of the film. The next meeting will be September 10 and will feature a discussion of chapters one and two of Lewis’ book, “A Grief Observed.” Submitted by Barry Anderson

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: not recorded. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. The group began a study of  Lewis’ book A Grief Observed and discussed chapters one and two. The next meeting will be October 8 and will be a discussion of chapter three of A Grief Observed. Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary Present: not recorded. Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer. The group began a study of  Lewis’ book A Grief Observed and discussed chapter three.
