Minutes of January 11, 2004 meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary

Present:  Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Tom Boulden, Bill Cupo, Janet Cupo, Mike Embry, Alex Gray, Patrick Gray, Don Johnson
Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

The group viewed a number of new purchases of first editions to be donated to the CSL Collection and Study Center.

The program consisted of a discussion of chapters 11-16 of Out of the Silent Planet.

The next meeting will be on February 8 and the program will be chapters 17-22 ofOut of the Silent Planet.

Minutes of February 8, 2004 meeting

Brockwell Room – Memphis Theological Seminary

Present:  Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Tom Boulden, Bryan Carter, Bill Cupo, Janet Cupo, Rebecca Cupo, Alex Gray, Don Johnson, Ann Marty, Bill Marty.

Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Marty announced the 2004 “Christianity and the Academy” Conference at the University of Memphis on April 2, 2004.  The theme of the conference will be “Confronting the Academy with a Christian Vision” and the keynote speaker will be Bill Jenkins.

Beets led a discussion about the status of the non-profit application of the society.  A bank account will be set up soon and donations were solicited to defray the costs.

Beets announced that a local artist has been commissioned to produce a Lewis-themed painting and the prints would be sold as a fundraiser for the work of the society.

The program consisted of a discussion of chapters 17-22 of Out of the Silent Planet.

The next meeting will be on March 14 and the program will be announced prior to the meeting.

Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Barry Anderson reminded everyone about the Christianity and the Academy Conference at the University of Memphis on April 2, 2004.
The program consisted of a viewing of lesson one of the video seriesThe Life and Writings of C. S. Lewis by Louis Markos.  This was followed by a critique of the video and discussion of the material.

The next meeting will be on April 4 and the program will be a discussion of An Experiment in Criticism chapters 1-4.

Beets reported that a bank account had been established and an application has been made for 501(c)(3) status

Minutes of May 9, 2004 meeting

Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Barry Anderson noted that Patrick Gray has an article published inTouchstone magazine.
Bill Marty reported on the Christianity in the Academy Conference. Three members of the group presented papers to the conference.

An e-mail from Don Johnson was read, announcing that he had relocated to California for a ministry job.  He will be missed by the group.

Donations are solicited in honor of Dr. W. E. Knickerbocker�s thirty years of teaching at Memphis Theological Seminary.

Barry Anderson announced an upcoming two-part PBS series on The Question of God.  The special will compare the lives and influence of C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud.
The program consisted of a discussion of Perelandra chapters 3-4.
The next meeting will be on October 10 and the program will be a discussion ofPerelandra chapters 5-7.

Minutes of October 10, 2004 meeting

Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Barry Anderson expressed appreciation to James Dowd, of the Commercial Appeal, for the excellent article on the Society, published on October 3, 2004.
David Moose spoke on his trip to Oxford England and presented a photo display of CSL-related sights.
Barry Anderson presented information on the 2005 OxBridge Conference in Oxford and Cambridge.
The Society was presented a copy of Rob Thompson’s Rhodes College senior paper for inclusion in the MTS CSL Collection and Study Center.  The paper is titled “Is Pride Irrational? A Critique of John Hick’s Argument that a ‘Fall’ is Inconceivable as Presented in Evil and the God of Love, Using the Perspective of C.S. Lewis as Found in Perelandra and The Problem of Pain.”
The program consisted of a discussion of Perelandra chapters 5-7.
The next meeting will be on November 14 and the program will be a discussion ofPerelandra chapters 8-10.
