MEMPHIS C.S. LEWIS SOCIETY Minutes December 8, 1996The meeting began at 7:00 P.M. in the Brockwell Room at Memphis Theological Seminary. After a period of socializing and refreshments, the formal meeting was called to order with a collect for the second Sunday of Advent from the 1789 Book of Common Prayer. The steering committee presented two items of business: 1. The Charter of the society was presented for approval by the founding members. After considerable discussion and a minor change in the wording of Paragraph 8, the Charter was ratified unanimously. 2. The By-Laws of the Executive Committee were presented to the founding members for consideration. Discussion will occur at the January meeting. Both of the documents submitted by the steering committee have been modeled on similar documents of the New York C.S. Lewis Society. One oversight from the December meeting was corrected and another such oversight avoided as the efforts of Cydney Beets, Sandie Knickerbocker and Judith Oliver to provide refreshments for our first meetings were recognized. As agreed in November, this meeting was devoted to reading some of our favorite passages from the Lewis literature, each reading followed by discussion. Selections read included sections of Letter II from The Screwtape Letters; A Grief Observed; "Meditations in a Toolshed" from God in the Dock; "Time and Beyond Time" from Mere Christianity; and a long paragraph from Chapter three of The Abolition of Man. Discussion was as lively and free ranging as the selections themselves. Of particular interest was the question of whether the parish system defended by Lewis in several of his writings is as effective in the United States as in Europe. Barry Anderson brought to our attention an internet mailing list known as merelewis, which offers excellent discussion. The meeting adjourned with the announcement that our January meeting will be held at Steak and Ale Restaurant, 6201 Poplar Avenue on Sunday, January 12 at 7:00 P.M. for 30 minutes of fellowship and visiting prior to beginning the formal meeting at 7:30. Present were: Barry Anderson, Cydney Beets, Rich Cook, Larry Lacy, Ann Marty, Bill Marty, Bob Oliver, and -Dennis Beets
