Memphis C. S. Lewis Society Minutes for November 9, 1997 Brockwell Room - Memphis Theological Seminary Present: Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Janet Cupo, Knick Knickerbocker, Sandi Knickerbocker, Andy McClung, Ann Marty, Bill Marty. The meeting was opened by reading the Collect of the Day for the Twenty-fourth Sunday after Trinity. It was noted that the meeting marked the one year anniversary of the society. The group discussed possible efforts to increase membership now that a solid core group has been established. Beginning in January, the meetings and program topics will be publicized in the media and through local churches. Dennis Beets presented copies of the society's newsletter, "The Unicorn's Horn." A subscription will be provided to Memphis Theological Seminary library in order to insure a public archive for the newsletter. The group was informed of an interesting series of e-mail exchanges between Dennis Beets, Doug Gresham, and an Anglican diocese in Canada concerning the inaccuracy of claims that Lewis was involved in the Waldorf School movement, which stemmed from Rudolf Steiner's religious system called Anthroposophy. Barry Anderson served as moderator for the program. The discussion focused on the meanings of myth as portrayed by Lewis in two essays: "Myth Became Fact" (God in the Dock) and "The Funeral of a Great Myth" (Christian Reflections). Knick Knickerbocker closed the meeting with a related reading from his newly published book of poetry. Submitted by Barry Anderson |
