Minutes of October 12, 2003 meeting

Brockwell Room - Memphis Theological Seminary

Present: Barry Anderson, Dennis Beets, Tom Boulden, Bill Cupo, Janet Cupo, Steve Edscorn, Alex Gray, Patrick Gray, Don Johnson, Knick Knickerbocker, Sandie Knickerbocker, Ann Marty, Bill Marty.

Dennis Beets opened the meeting with prayer.

Tom Boulden presented a beautiful bronze cast of a bust of C. S Lewis.  It is an exact replica of the original bust commissioned by the Marion E. Wade Center of Wheaton College, Illinois.  The group expressed its deep gratitude for the gift.

After discussions with the President and Librarian of Memphis Theological Seminary, the seminary has extended an offer to house the bust of Lewis in the MTS library.  The group agreed to accept the offer.

Barry Anderson proposed that the Society sponsor a collection and study center at MTS.  The collection and study center would seek to collect materials by and about C. S. Lewis, W. H. Lewis, Joy Davidman Lewis, Owen Barfield, J. R. R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, G. K Chesterton, E. Nesbit, Charles Williams, and Dorothy L. Sayers.  The group agreed to the proposal.

Barry Anderson proposed that the Society seek to incorporate as a nonprofit corporation and become a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.  The group agreed to the proposal.

The program featured reviews of two recently published books about Lewis, C. S. Lewis at the BBC by Justin Phillips (presented by Tom Boulden) and Reading the Classics with C. S. Lewis by Thomas Martin (presented by Alex and Patrick Gray).

The next meeting will be on November 9.  The program will be beginning discussion of Out of the Silent Planet
